Carson Continues Winning Run

Putaruru’s Drew Carson has continued her winning ways picking up a double at the Canterbury Championships Premier League Show at the South Island NEC McLeans Island, near Christchurch.

Backing up from success at the McMillan Equine Feeds NZ National Showjumping and Showhunter Championships last weekend, Carson again proved too strong winning the hotly-contested Telford/Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider for the second week on the trot.

Riding the 12-year-old gelding Winston V Drienne, Carson was one of nine to go through to the jump-off, and having picked up two rails with her first ride Double Shott early in the piece, she knew exactly what she needed to do to win. Chasing Steffi Whittaker’s time of 50.35 seconds, Carson flew home in 48.69 seconds moving into the lead and putting the pressure on the final two to go who couldn’t quite pull it off.

Today, Carson and Winston V Drienne again stepped up winning the Tavern Harewood Horse Mini Prix in a five-way tussle against the clock, posting the only double clear over the tough Philippa Howell’s-designed track. The win topped off a fantastic inaugural trip south for the Carson-family, and for Drew especially. This was her first win at 1.35m.

Angus Taylor (Ohoka) continued his strong run of form on the 10-year-old Thoroughbred Oak As taking out the Excel/Kinloch Farms Premier League finishing the two rounds on 8 faults, ahead of second placed Olivia Robertson on Ngahiwi Cisco with 12, who was backing up from success in yesterday’s Canterbury Equestrian Young Rider.

The ponies continued to put in a top jumping display with just Steffi Whittaker (Springston) on Moonlight Glow and Rosa Buist-Brown posting clears in the 14 strong field. Both jumped clear over the jump-off course with Whittaker taking the win by more than a second, with new National champion Ally Carson filling third and fourth spots with Tony The Pony and Tiger Tale LS respectively.

Local Chris Harris (Alyesbury) came through to win the Let’s Bale Pro Am in a two-way battle against the clock on his lovely grey Glenbrook Archie Bunker, while Waimate’s Harriet Gardner made it back-to-back wins in the Caledonian Holdings Amateur rider this time aboard her wee chestnut Cee Mee. She was also sixth on Artic Invader.

The show brought to a close two huge weeks of jumping action in Canterbury. Now all eyes head north for the Farmlands Horse of the Year Show which runs in Hastings from March 1-6.
