Big, bright, beautiful surprise lunch

Big, bright, beautiful surprise lunch

Excitement will be high around alfresco lunch tables in the central city on Friday, as bidders complete for hampers to find out what they will eat for lunch.

This is a very big week in Hastings, as its annual art deco celebrations kick off.

Thursday starts at 9am with Madness in the Mall, below the clock tower. It will have stalls adorned with essential art deco clothes, shoes and accessories, for those aiming to be dressed in theme while packing in as much action as possible during the region’s week-long Tremains Art Deco Festival. Organiser and art deco stalwart Barbi Speers says stall holders are coming from far and wide, including one from Australia.

Once dressed for success, everyone will be ready for the art deco night market on Thursday evening, the Black Tie Ball in the Church Hall on Thursday night, and the Tremains Hastings Hamper Auction on Friday.

The night market and hamper lunch are organised by the Hastings City Business Association.

The art deco-themed night market under the clock tower, from 5pm to 9pm, will be a whole lot of fun, says business association manager Susan McDade. A train-load of visitors from Napier will arrive at 6pm to spend a couple of hours at the market, shopping and soaking in the art deco tunes by the Twin City Stompers and The Flukes, adding to the regular night market crowd. “Dress is deco, so feel free to don the boa, the T-bars and the hat.”

A special event on the Thursday, with formal attire de rigueur, is the Black Tie Ball in the Church Hall in Market St, from 7.30pm. An “excellent” meal, followed by the Hawke’s Bay Jazz Club Big Band, is promised.

Friday’s auction will see a crowd descend on the central city for their hamper lunch, with the proceeds going to St John Ambulance. The tables bid for one of 20 hampers, only knowing which eatery prepared the goodies. “The bidding was frenzied last year,” said Mrs McDade, driven by the promise of good food and the knowledge that the proceeds were going to charity. There will be prizes for best dressed table, man and woman.

Hastings district councillor Sandra Hazlehurst, who was at last year’s lunch and had booked early for this said, it was “a lot of fun and for a good cause”.

“Thursday and Friday are going to be huge days in the city. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our art deco architecture in our beautiful Hastings city and to join in the district’s celebration of our art deco heritage.”

But wait there is more: Guided walks touring Hastings art deco, Spanish Mission and stripped classical architecture are being run daily from this Wednesday (February 17) to Saturday (February 20). Being led by Hawke’s Bay historian and author Michael Fowler, they will leave walkers with a broad knowledge of Hastings history, both pre and post the 1031 earthquake, which led to the proliferation of art deco styles, and ultimately to the art deco festival celebrated every year in Napier and Hastings.
