Ed Kuepper solo NZ shows announced

Ed Kuepper solo NZ shows announced

Plus1 and undertheradar proudly present two NZ headline dates for Ed Kuepper in April.

Ed Kuepper is undisputed Australian music royalty. A chief architect of both The Saints and Laughing Clowns, he’s one of the most distinctive guitarists and songwriters that country has produced.
The Brisbane-based songsmith will perform career-spanning solo electric shows at Tuning Fork in Auckland on Saturday 16 April, and Meow in Wellington onSunday 17 April.
These concerts follow the completion of his three-date NZ tour with The Stranglers (Auckland sold out, Wellington and Christchurch selling fast).

Tickets for Ed’s Auckland show are available at Ticketmaster.co.nz (from 11am Fri 19 Feb) and for Wellington at UTR.co.nz (on sale today and instore at Slow Boat Records & RPM).
Kuepper’s New Zealand shows come 40 years after the release of his first record, the iconic Australian classic ”[I’m] Stranded” by The Saints.

In solo electric format, Kuepper will perform songs from across his wonderfully prolific career – including material from The Saints, Laughing Clowns, Aints, and various solo incarnations.

Ed Kuepper last played New Zealand in 2013 with US legends Television at the Powerstation, of which Russell Baillie from the NZ Herald wrote:

“Picking the eyes out of a vast songbook dating back to Aussie punk pioneers The Saints and jazz-framed post-punk outfit The Laughing Clowns, Kueppercaptivated with his acoustic playing, a mix of muscular attack and delicate chord shadings and his plaintive songs of damaged love.

His renditions of the Clowns' Eternally Yours, and his own The Way I Made You Feel and Everything I've Got Belongs to You reminded he's got some timeless gems in that back catalogue and he was a stirring start to the night.”

The tour coincides with the NZ release of his acclaimed new album Lost Cities, which is remarkably Kuepper’s 50th release (excluding compilations). Lost Cities takes a new approach. Ed explains:

“When I was a kid I always processed recordings as a kind of singular whole, so when I started to play the guitar I wanted my playing to be the entire orchestra/band rather than just the guy strumming in the corner.

A good example would be the way I played Nights in Venice on the first Saints lp… or the acoustic with hyper harmonic overtones on Today Wonder. Lost Cities continues that approach but also moves into the tonal opposite of what I did when I started”.

Kuepper has twice in consecutive years won Australia’s ARIA Music Awards for ‘Best Independent Release’ for his solo albums Black Ticket Day and Serene Machine. He has also toured as a member of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.
