New Zealand wins transtasman shearing test
The New Zealand shearing team tonight overcame transtasman hex dating back more than two years when they scored a comfortable win in the home leg of an annual home and away series.
Shearing at the Golden Shears in Masterton, the New Zealand team of Tony Coster, of Rakaia, Aaron Hayynes, of Feilding, and Troy Pyper, of Winton, beat the South Australian shearers Shannon Warnest and Justin Dolphin and NSW gun Daniel McIntyre by more than 12pts.
It ended a run of five consecutive defeats since New Zealand’s last win in the series in Masterton in 2013.
But Warnest, shearing in his 25th consecutive transtasman test since 2004, still came out as the top individual on points, although Pyper was first to finish the contest of 12 sheep each (6 merino, 3 long wool, 3 lambs) in 16min 27.98sec.
The victory wrapped up a successful weekend for New Zealandat the Golden Shears, with Joel Henare, of Gisborne, and Sheree Alabaster, of Taihape, having won Friday night’s woolhandling test against Australians Racheal Hutchison and Angela Wakely.
The transtasman shearing tests were first held in 1974, with Australia having won 30 and New Zealand 29.
