CSO Concertmaster takes role of both director and soloist

Christchurch Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Martin Riseley takes the stage as both director and soloist in the first of a brand new series of concerts.

Martin helms the first of the Artist Series in association with the Friends of CSO, which features pieces by Haydn, Schubert, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky, on Saturday, April 9, 7.30pm at the Charles Luney Auditorium.

“The directing-soloist role is a natural fit in the right repertoire, which is why I've chosen these particular works,” said Martin.

“I've done this sort of thing a number of times and it's always very rewarding, allowing all the musicians a lot of scope with what they are doing. With the smaller orchestra it becomes, in a way, a giant chamber group. These pieces are some of my favourites to play as soloist-director, and contain great beauty and depth, and I look forward to working with the players next week!”

Originally from Christchurch and an alumnus of the University of Canterbury, Martin studied at Juilliard School in New York and has performed with internationally renowned musicians like Yo Yo Ma and Pinchas Zukerman.
