Classic rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar returns to Auckl

Classic rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar is returning to Auckland for a thrilling two week season from April 30 at Harlequin Musical Theatre in Howick.

Tickets are on sale now for the popular musical, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, which features well¬known songs Everything’s Alright,What’s the Buzz, andHosanna.

Directed by D.T. Morgan and with a cast of more than 40 performers, this production will take audiences on a modern¬day journey through Jesus Christ’s final days.

“This is an exciting retelling of the greatest story ever told through the eyes of Judas,” Morgan says.

“We’re making this amazing story relatable to our lives today with the power of the media and the effect it has on public opinion.”

Proudly supporting New Zealand Sign Language Week from May 9 to 15, the production incorporates sign language into some of the direction and choreography.

Aiming to be all inclusive for both deaf and hearing audiences, an interpreted performance on May 11 will be followed by a question and answer session with cast and creatives.

“Using sign language within a show is quite rare, especially within New Zealand theatre, so for New Zealand, and especially in musical theatre, it’s quite a new concept,” says choreographer Kimberley Cousins.

Jesus Christ Superstar is a 1970s rock opera, originally written as a concept album before its first Broadway staging in 1971.

The show tells the biblical story of Jesus’s last week of life, highlighting the struggle between him and his disciple, Judas, who eventually betrays Jesus, leading to his arrest and crucifixion.
