NZDF Support to 2016 Anzac Day Commemorations

The Chief of Defence Force, Lieutenant General (LTGEN) Tim Keating, has today announced the scope of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) commitment to this year’s Anzac Day commemorations in New Zealand and overseas.

LTGEN Keating said NZDF personnel will support more than 300 civic and community events in New Zealand including the national commemorations at Pukeahu National War Memorial Park in Wellington.

NZDF contingents will conduct Anzac Day-related services in France and Belgium, and at Gallipoli in Turkey. Other overseas-based NZDF personnel will also mark Anzac Day, including members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s (RNZAF) No. 40 Squadron which will be in the United States on exercise.

“On Anzac Day, we remember the service and sacrifice of all military personnel who have served New Zealand,’’ LTGEN Keating said.

“We also acknowledge NZDF personnel currently on deployment around the world – those working alongside our friends in the Australian Defence Force in Iraq, those on peacekeeping missions with the United Nations, and those who have been providing relief support to our Fijian neighbours devastated by Tropical Cyclone Winston.”

This year also marks the centenary of the first commemoration of Anzac Day – the first time communities and families across New Zealand joined together in remembrance of the events of 25 April 1915 on the distant shores of the Gallipoli Peninsula.

LTGEN Keating said that as well as remembering and honouring the past, Anzac Day also provided an opportunity to thank families and communities for making it possible for current NZDF personnel to serve the interests of our country.

“I extend my warmest thanks to them on behalf of the women and men of the Defence Force,” said LTGEN Keating.

Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) vessels will be deployed to their home ports around New Zealand and the RNZAF will conduct fly pasts over some areas of the country.
