Council welcomes megastar Cindy Sherman

Wellington City Council is proud to announce its support for an exhibition by one of the most influential contemporary artists of our time. New York-based Cindy Sherman will be exhibiting at City Gallery from 19 November 2016 to 19 March 2017.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says, "Cindy Sherman is an amazing thought-provoking artist and I'm delighted Wellington has secured this contemporary exhibition."

Cindy Sherman has changed the rules of photography. She famously plays the roles of model, stylist and make-up artist in her satirical character portraits, which challenge us to confront stereotypes about women, identity and gender.

Councillor Jo Coughlan, Chair of the City Council’s Economic Growth and Arts Committee, says, "This exhibition further showcases City Gallery Wellington as New Zealand's leading contemporary art gallery.

"The exhibition will be a significant summer attraction suiting Wellington’s status as the arts and culture capital of New Zealand."

Cindy Sherman will take over the whole of City Gallery. The exhibition includes more than 50 large-scale photographs and a site-specific mural. It will also include a number of entirely new works.

The Council’s Arts Portfolio Leader, Councillor Ray Ahipene-Mercer, has great respect for Sherman’s work. “Her work is often confronting and, as an artist myself, I respect that. The fact the Council has partnered with City Gallery to bring Sherman here is a coup.”
