Council partners with Creative New Zealand to support local community arts
Twice a year Wellington City Council and Creative New Zealand come together to support local arts activities through the Creative Communities Scheme. In this funding round the scheme supported 26 community arts projects.
The Wellington Youth Orchestra (WYO) received funding for their up and coming concert at the Sacred Heart Cathedral on Hill Street, 10 May. The WYO was established in 1959 to provide symphonic experience for young players under 25 including secondary school students. For this performance the 50 member orchestra will be conducted by New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Principal Cellist, Andrew Joyce.
MS doesn’t stop me Singing will be held in the Mezzanine Room in Wellington Central Library, 25 May. People with Multiple Sclerosis, their families, friends and carers along with members of local community choirs will celebrate World MS Day with song.
Strathmore youth will get the chance to learn photography and journalism skills through funding ZEAL Education has received for Strathmore Portraits project. Young people will take portraits and quotes from members of their community to highlight the diversity of the suburb. The project will culminate in an exhibition in Strathmore late 2016.
The next Creative Communities funding round for Wellington will close at the end of August. Anyone with an idea for a community arts project should email Council's funding team on funding@wcc.govt.nz
