Boost for young performing artists in Wellington


Young performing artists with big dreams and a connection to Wellington are are being offered a helping hand thanks to the Dame Malvina Major Foundation’s Arts Excellence Awards.

The Dame Malvina Major Foundation assists young New Zealanders in the performing arts achieve their potential by providing education and training opportunities, supporting them to prepare for professional careers. It does this through a range of grants, prizes and scholarships.

Up to $5,000 will be awarded by the Wellington Committee of the Dame Malvina Major Foundation to a young Wellingtonian of outstanding ability and real development potential in the performing arts.

Previous recipients have included baritone Christian Thurston, violist Alice McIvor and soprano Isabella Moore.

Dame Malvina Major said the Arts Excellence Awards were just one of the ways the Foundation supported young artists at a grass roots level.

“The focus of our regional committees is on fostering local talent and supporting the development of young emerging artists in their communities. Alongside financial support, this can include offering professional guidance and organising events where young talented artists have the opportunity to perform.

“The Foundation is very proud to be able to support promising young artists and to help grow the next generation of talent.”
