Hillcrest High School tops Art Award for 4th Year

Hillcrest High School tops Art Award for Fourth Consecutive Year

Winner, Joaquin Belisario with His Piece

Hillcrest High School has taken out the Paterson Burn Optometrists Excellence in Art Award for the Fourth Year in a row.

Results were announced last night at Creative Waikato, where judges selected the work of Year 13 student Joaquin Belisario as the top entry, beating out 72 other entrants at the annual art competition, which this year saw the highest number of entries yet.

Belisario’s piece addressed the competition's theme ‘An Eye to the Future’ and says he was inspired ‘by the idea of us consumers and what we would look like if we continued behaving as consumers who don’t care for the environment.’

Entries were received from across the Waikato, Coromandel and Auckland and artist and member of the judging panel, Elwyn Stone said, ‘art is a way of connecting with others’ and that Belisario’s piece stood out as his technique and approach represented that of his generation. This is the fourth year that the independent optometrists have organised the event.

Second place was awarded to Elise Francis from Baradene College, with Iris Du from Mt Roskill Grammar School in third place.

The judges elected to award a Highly Commended to Cassia Ten Hove from Hamilton Christian School.

Prize money, donated by Paterson Burn Optometrists, will be shared between the artists and their schools.

For the first time this year, the public were also involved in the selection of a winner. The Breeze Waikato People’s Choice Award was run in conjunction with the radio station, with Phoebe Clewlow-Gibson being selected the winner.

The auction of the artworks also broke records this year, raising $2047.00 in total. Angela Hu from Hillcrest High School had the top-bidded piece, going for $290.00.

Hu’s piece was inspired by, ‘the brilliant colours and patterns of the iris.'

Paterson Burn CEO, Darren Savage says wider community support has played a key role in helping to raise funds, “we had families and school communities bidding on these works, and this year we also had key members of the art industry take part in bidding, which is very exciting for the artists. It was also a bonus that the public were involved in the choosing of one of the awards.”

The proceeds of the auction will be divided between Diabetes Waikato and the artists themselves.
