Aroha Mai Aroha Atu, Giving Back is Giving Forward.

Young people and youth agencies in Nelson-Tasman are gearing up for a week-long programme of youth activities, events, workshops and exhibitions as Youth Week 2016 is celebrated across the world and in the Top of the South.

Nelson Tasman Youth Workers Collective Coordinator Deanne Kilpatrick says Youth Week is about recognising the amazing contributions and achievements of New Zealand’s youth. She says the aim is to inspire our society to value, support and affirm the diversity of its young people.

“This year the theme is Aroha Mai Aroha Atu, Giving Back is Giving Forward, which advocates celebrating a culture of supporting each other within and across generations,” Kilpatrick says. “As we give back to those who gave to us we give forward to the next generation as role models and in building healthy communities.”

She says she is excited with the enthusiasm and support the region has shown towards embracing youth week celebrations: “There are some fantastic youth events planned for youth week, offering a variety of ways young people can be involved – from a lunch time student concert in Motueka to chalk drawing at the 1903 Square.”

A Nelson-Tasman Youth Week event listing brochure highlights the youth events on offer regionally and can be picked up from Nelson City and Tasman District Council Service Centres and libraries or at www.jamonline.co.nz
