Judging of the ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards

25 May 2016

Judging of the ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards

The best architectural designs in the country – across residential and commercial sectors – were under scrutiny last week, with standout entries showing creative and thoughtful use of space.

A prestigious panel of architectural practitioners and experts evaluated 149 entries into the 2016 ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards and determined that this year the quality of design is higher than ever.

Chief Architect at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment Dr Duncan Joiner noted an increasing emphasis on thoughtful, restrained design, saying the interpretation of good principles of design is clearly evident.

“Essentially, it’s safe to say design in New Zealand is in good hands,” says Joiner.

Director of Architecture Programmes at the University of Auckland Michael Davis says there is increasing emphasis on being smart when it comes to spending money.

“Often with constraint, comes innovation. A lot more entries – even in the expansive categories – showed an understanding that it’s worth thinking carefully about where dollars are spent.

“In the renovation categories, real value is being placed on existing buildings and we’re seeing small changes that are having huge impacts,” says Davis. “For example a small add on or opening to the outside can completely change the way a space is used.”

Davis emphasised the ‘end user is what it is all about’ when it comes to winning design.

“We’re seeing a more holistic approach to design and across all categories we’re seeing good orientation and positioning with buildings making the most of passive energy,” says Davis.

ADNZ CEO, Astrid Andersen congratulated all the designers who entered and agreed with the judging panel saying that entries this year were particularly outstanding.

“Entries to our design awards come from designers who are on the cusp of achieving greatness in the industry, through to experienced practitioners with incredibly high standards. It is always wonderful to see the diversity across the sector. What all these entrants do have in common is the desire to showcase their talent and hard work. For those fortunate enough to be awarded a winners title, it can catapult their business into the next level,” said Andersen.

Held annually, the ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards recognise the best architectural designs in the country. The awards identify stand-out designs categorised as new homes, interiors, alterations and additions and industrial design. The judging panel underwent three days of deliberating in Christchurch last week ahead of the awards season. This year’s judges are Michael Davis, Dr Duncan Joiner and first-time judge and past ADNZ Supreme Award Winner, Graeme Boucher.

Regional award winners will be announced throughout June and July with the national winners announced October, 2016.
