Bringing Magic To Whanganui

Bringing Magic To Whanganui

MediaWorks is pleased to announce Magic, New Zealand`s newest radio station, will be hitting the Whanganui airwaves on July 1, 2016.

Magic has been on air throughout the country for just over a year, and in that time, has built a loyal band of listeners who are passionate about the station and the music it plays. The station is aimed at 50-69 year-olds who have a youthful, active approach to life, and features the music and culture that shaped their formative years; from Elvis to the Beach Boys, Roy Orbison to Dusty Springfield, and long-time rockers like Rod Stewart.

Magic Content Director Ian Avery says: “We are thrilled to be bringing the fantastic music that Magic offers to Whanganui. While other radio stations have moved away from this format, we proudly play music from the 50s, 60s and 70s – and have an enviable suite of announcers who are some of the most experienced and respected in the business, including Mark Leishman, Geoff Bryan, Bob Gentil and Mark Smith.

“We love this station, our listeners love it to fanatical levels, and we can`t wait to bring the Magic to Whanganui.”

Magic will replace Mai FM on the 90.4FM frequency. MediaWorks Central Regional Manager Tim Lockhart says the decision to change the Mai FM frequency to Magic was not made lightly.

“A number of key factors have been taken into consideration, including the smaller than national average 18-29 demographic, and the larger than average 55+ demographic. This combined with other factors and issues we've made the hard choice to change out one of the youth brands, Mai FM and put Magic into Whanganui.

“We acknowledge we will have some disappointed Mai listeners, to whom we will encourage to listen online or on the Mai app,” he says.
