Cunningham looks to positives before Gisborne
West Auckland’s Clint Cunningham is looking at the positives from what has been an up and down campaign in the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship to date as he heads to round four, Rally Gisborne.
After retiring early from the opening round, Cunningham has produced strong results at rounds two and three before circumstances outside of his control have seen his strong results flushed down the toilet. Despite the setbacks, Cunningham holds down tenth place in the championship standings.
The latest result, Rally Canterbury, was a particularly tough pill to swallow as Cunningham recorded what he thought was his first podium finish, only to be relegated on a technicality that dropped him to 13th.
However, Cunningham claims there is plenty to be encouraged by as both the speed and the reliability of the RCK Contractors Mitsubishi Evo Proto WRC car has increased with the new partnership with Possum Bourne Motorsport.
“Although there are certainly some things that haven’t gone our way this year, they’ve really been out of our control and we just hope we can keep our nose clean at Gisborne to truly reflect the developing speed we have in the car,” says Cunningham. “It’s not always been a kind event to us in the past, but I think this event could be a really good one for us.”
The 2016 Rally Gisborne takes place on July 2. Crews take on six special stages totalling 150 kilometres before returning to Gisborne for the ceremonial finish at Reads Quay from 6.25pm.
