King and Coll Set To Claim North Island Championship Titles

King and Coll Set To Claim North Island Championship Titles

Joelle King and Paul Coll are the top seeds at this weekend’s North Island Championships being hosted by the Havelock North Squash Club. There will be some great games with a large number of New Zealand’s top players attending this event.

In the Women’s Open World Ranked number 9 Joelle King takes the top seed and will face local up and comer Winona-Jo Joyce in her first game. Should all go to plan King will be set to play Belgium number 1 and world ranked number 38 Nele Gilis in the final. Gilis will also be playing another local hero in her first round playing Rhiarne Taiapa. Both King and Gilis are seeded to face Amanda Landers-Murphy and Megan Craig respectively in the Semi-Finals where both players will be making sure to make their mark and try and knock the top 2 seeds out of their way to the final. With 13 A-Graders in the Women’s Open it is sure to be a weekend of closely contested battles.

In the Men’s Open Top Seed and current World Ranked number 31 Paul Coll will be looking to continue his fine form over the past 12 months and will be set to add another title to his collection. Coll will be due to face Evan Williams in the final. Williams will have to make his way past Lance Beddoes in the Semi-Finals and Coll past Ben Grindrod. The Men’s Open boasts 16 A grade male players and sees all of the World Junior Boys team beginning their final preparation before they depart for Poland in less than a months’ time.
