Eight Artists Farewell Old Papatoetoe Mall
For the past few months, a number of shops in the Old Papatoetoe mall have sat empty, anticipating the site’s redevelopment, due to begin soon.
Before it gets a new look, however, eight young artists have been invited to occupy the empty stores with a series of works that salute, celebrate, and respond to the area.
Among them are: Vinesh Kumaran, who will be showing photographic portraits of people from Papatoetoe; Pooja Subramanian and Quishile Charan, whose work explores Indian and Indo-Fijian life with warmth and cheekiness; and Kerry Ann Lee, whose works create a sense of unexpected longing for places we may never see.
As well as this, residents are invited to take away a selection of work in postcard form: to remember the exhibition and to share it with others.
This ‘pop-up and pocket’ exhibition is part of Satellites, a pilot programme of events celebrating diverse arts outside of the city centre. The programme is presented by the online arts and culture journal The Pantograph Punch and is supported by Auckland Council.
