ARTWEEK AUCKLAND 2016
ACROSS AUCKLAND 8 – 16 OCTOBER

Artweek Auckland spreads like wildfire across Auckland blazing into a new precinct in 2016 with a vibrant and dynamic programme. Over ten days the festival will celebrate and showcase the visual arts and artists of Auckland from 8 – 16 October, with favourite events returning and new artists included as it expands into East Auckland.

Throughout the week activations will be taking place in different precincts all over Auckland including the Central City, Newmarket, Ponsonby, Arch Hill, Parnell, K’Road, Devonport, and more – also now including a full programme in the Eastern suburbs. Newcomers and experts alike can immerse themselves in Auckland’s amazingly dynamic art world, experience striking and remarkable works.

The week kicks off in the CBD on Saturday 8th October, with Peter Roche’s astonishing multi-sensory art installation ASYLUM in Silo Six at Wyndham Quarter. With its dramatic subject matter, universal themes and thought-provoking content, ASYLUM is a provocative and timely installation.

The Heart of the City comes alive with over forty art events, activations and exhibitions. In a new project Changing Lanes, teams of artists transform six city lanes, bringing intriguing installations that add character and life to the cityscape. Late Night Art is on Wednesday 12ththis year with galleries open into the evening, including the Auckland Art Gallery, with an assortment of activities and activations until 9pm in the central city.

Ponsonby hosts world renowned artist Reg Mombassa, who’s in town for his new book launch and exhibition. The precinct will come alive with its annual programme and make sure you watch your step with Pavement Portals in Ponsonby as 3D Anamorphic Pavement Portal drawings come to life on the strip.

K’ Road introduces Electric Night on Thursday 13th, with galleries along the road and into Arch Hill open late, complete with an exclusive art party at the iconic Las Vegas Lounge. Installations along the road can be explored on an electric bike tour; including LOOK, along with galleries and artist collectives.

The popular outdoor exhibit GLOW returns to Devonport, with teams of students from Unitec School of Architecture presenting their stunning light installations. Devonport Village becomes even more animated with exhibitions, art films at The Vic, special offers on dining and much more.

Newmarket and Parnell celebrate their public artworks and fantastic galleries with walks, talks, interactive shows, and life drawing. Parnell will showcase its best from fine dining to a delectable diversity of ethnic menus, food tastings to cooking classes to inspiring visual displays in the art galleries.

East Auckland brings an all-star lineup showcasing two decades of dedication to graffiti withTMD Crew celebrating their 20th anniversary through a group exhibition, including new works displayed between The Good, The Bad and Te Oro. A late night at Te Tuhi encourages visitors to get involved with artist run games and activities - an event supporting their international exhibition Share Cheat Unite.

West Auckland delivers an amazing range of events for the whole family, with Te Uru’s majorJohn Parker survey show, exhibitions, talks and open studios at Corban Estate Art Centre,McCahon House, and Kumeu Arts Centre. There will be a hive of activity at ArtWest, which invites participation in free art workshops, artist talks, performances and tours, hosted by Kelston Girls College.

Go South to discover all on offer including a look at the Wallace Art Award Winners for 2016 at The Pah Homestead, along with panel discussions, exhibitions and workshops at Māngere Arts Centre, Franklin Arts Centre, Papakura Gallery, and Fresh Gallery Otara.

From free guided walks and cycle tours, to galleries and city lanes, the Auckland region will come alive with drama, light, transformations, graffiti, and art!
