Scott remains ahead of target in World Record bid

An Irish shearer with a team of New Zealand helpers is setting up an afternoon of high drama in England as he tries to break a World record in which a Kiwi gun shore a lamb every 37.41 seconds for nine hours.

Shearing at Trefranck Farm in Cornwall and targeting New Zealand shearer Dion King’s solo record of 886 strongwool lambs in nine hours, Ivan Scott had shorn 532 in the 5 hours 30 minutes to the lunch break at 11pm (midday UK).

He opened with 193 in the two-hour run to breakfast and 170 and 169 in the following two runs of 1hr 45min each.

It was two behind the 534 shorn by King at the same stage of his record in a King Country woolshed in January 2007. But he remained ahead of the targets of 37.37 seconds a lamb and 96.33 lambs an hour needed to break the record.

The technicalities of such a challenge were highlighted earlier this week by New Zealand shearer Matt Smith after he set a ewe-shearing record of 731 at the farm, which he runs with wife Pippa.

He said that his team had calculated a pace to break the record by one sheep, but as his day progressed he was more than a sheep ahead per hour.

Managing the attempt is Rotorua shearing contractor Jeff Dorset who has employed Scott over many summers since Scott first shore in New Zealand in 2000. Also in his corner are at least three other World record-breakers - Australia-based New Zealander Cartwright Terry, and Matt Smith and brother and World Champion Rowland Smith.
