Steve Wozniak Speaks on Today's Tech Industry Ahead of Nz Appearance

The co-founder of Apple Steve Wozniak has taken aim at today’s tech industry ahead of an appearance in New Zealand later this month, saying the money that’s there to be made “has attracted a different kind of people”.

Speaking regarding start-up culture today, Wozniak has said for “the ones that come out of business school, money’s the priority. For the ones that come out of engineering school, being able to accomplish and design things that didn’t exist before is their priority.”

Wozniak (aka “Woz”) famously left Apple in 1985 to “be a normal person”, and not to seek the wealth and power like others in the industry. Despite this, Woz’s fingerprints are all over the tech industry, and is regarded as being responsible for “kicking off the whole personal-computer revolution”.

Woz’s role in the industry is still as important today as ever, as the founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital-rights group who advocate for user privacy. “If you tell somebody ‘I am not snooping on you’, or ‘I am giving you some level of privacy; I will not look in your drawers,’ then you should keep your word and be honest,” says Woz.

Privacy will be one of the hot topics when Woz arrives in New Zealand this month for one night, along with the wonders of innovation and invention, and the importance of digital rights. Woz’s belief in a pleasure-driven work ethic will also be on display, one of the key qualities which earned him the moniker of “the mortal who soldered the chips, hand-wrote the code, and laid out the actual, technical vision for the personal computer”.

Woz will entertain, educate and inspire for one night in New Zealand this month. At a time when technology is playing a large role in society, and the importance of privacy and digital rights are greater than ever, who better to hear from than the co-founder of one of the largest tech companies in the world?
