Rockshop Bandquest 2016 Christchurch results

Media Release: Rockshop Bandquest 2016 Christchurch results

Riffs and raps dominated the stage over the first two nights of young rock music action in this year’s Christchurch finals of Rockshop Bandquest on Friday and Saturday, with the top bands each night winning credit with The Rockshop to the value $400 each for their school.

Rockshop Bandquest is for bands of two or more members, and this year has drawn over 150 entries from intermediate or primary schools, who play a short set of covers or original songs. Now in its sixth year, founder and director Glenn Common says he’s noticing an increase in the level of sophistication and performance skills of kids at intermediate age.

“They’re watching YouTube, they’re following aspirational heroes in the Kiwi music scene and they’ve got access to recording gear as close as the i-pad at home. Bandquest gives them the opportunity to put it all together in front of a real live audience, and the results are impressive.”

TUESDAY NIGHT
There is a final Canterbury Rockshop Bandquest event still to come on Tues 6 Sept at the Rangiora Town Hall, 7pm, door sales $10.

Rockshop spokesman, Hamish Jackson, says the prizes make a real difference to a school music department.

“It’s no secret that some schools are struggling to provide even the basics, let alone extras for subjects like music,” he said. “The prizes we provide go straight to the music department and help to build on the momentum of having their students performing in Bandquest. We love to see the continued increase in kids making music, because the outcomes are so positive for everyone involved, including the school and community.”

There are 12 live regional finals in Rockshop Bandquest this year, with mentoring sessions from successful Smokefreerockquest bands in the afternoon of the regional events. There is an online competition for bands in outlying areas and an online national final announcement later in September, via bandquest.co.nz.
