NZ Paralympics team aims for top honours per capita
NZ Paralympics team aims for top honours per capita – Media release
8 September 2016
Will the New Zealand Paralympics team retain the title of top medals per capita, achieved in London four years ago?
Statistics NZ is crunching the numbers during the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games to show how many medals countries win relative to their population.
This differs from the traditional medal table, which ranks countries based on how many gold, silver, and bronze medals they have won.
New Zealand is sending 31 athletes to the Games. New Zealand is aiming to win a total of 18 medals, including 12 gold, according to Paralympics NZ. Between them, this team has secured 23 world championships titles and 11 world records since 2012.
The New Zealand Paralympic team consists of one canoeist, three sailors, three shooters, eight cyclists, eight swimmers, and eight track and field athletes.
Our per capita medal tables will be updated each day.
Statistics NZ will have one of its own on the ground at the Paralympics. Paula Tesoriero, who won gold in cycling at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, is at this year’s Games as an interviewer for TVNZ. Paula Tesoriero is Statistics NZ’s general manager of system and partnerships.
The Paralympic Games run from 8 to 19 September in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Games are the world’s largest multi-sport event for disabled athletes. Over 4,350 athletes from more than 170 countries are expected to compete in 22 sports, with 528 medal events taking place.
