Teenage angst and mishaps inspire pop punk creativity

A bad day at school has inspired the creative talents of a group of young Wellington rockers, who are releasing an EP of original songs at Moon 1 café and bar in Newtown on 16 September.

Pop punk trio Mishap was formed by Wellington High school students Isaac Lundy, Datu Beech and Sean Beales earlier this year. Their first live performance at the heats of the Demon Energy Wellington Battle of the Bands propelled them to the regional finals.

“Our songs are about things that every teenager worries about - but from a punk angle, like extracurricular activities (stealing flowers from graveyards) and problems at school (a run in with the deputy principal),” says bassist Datu Beech.

The band’s energetic stage presence draws an enthusiastic following at youth venue Zeal, and at gigs from Wellington venues like Valhalla and Bodega to events further up the line in Levin.

With an active social media presence, and the backing of support bands, Bakers Eddy, City Talk and Casino Dogs, Mishap expects a strong and youthful crowd at its EP launch.

“Even if some of our fans have to bring their parents because it’s an R18 venue,” says Datu. “But we’ve found that their parents seem to quite like our music too.”

While many teenage bands may not look further than the end of their schooling, Mishap has ambitions to follow in the footsteps of former Wellington High school bands such as Shihad and the Phoenix Foundation in further establishing their footprint on the Wellington music scene.

“Our EP ‘Toaster’ will be available for sale on I-tunes and music sharing websites,” says Datu. “We know the future of the music industry is in digital media. But we’ll have our EP available for sale also on CD.”

$15 gains entry to the release party and a copy of the EP. Tickets are also available from www.undertheradar.co.nz . Videos, including a single from the EP, can be viewed on the Mishap YouTube channel
