Liam's gold adds to New Zealand's per capita medal treasure

Liam's gold adds to New Zealand's per capita medal treasure – Media release

16 September 2016

New Zealand has hit its target for 18 medals at the Rio Paralympics, extending its gilt-edged standing on the medals per capita tables, according to Statistics NZ.

Blade runner Liam Malone won gold in the men’s 400m T43/44.

New Zealand now has nine gold medals, five silver, and four bronze.

On a population basis, New Zealand’s 18 medals puts us ahead of the Netherlands in second place, and Australia in third place.

New Zealand’s team has picked up the equivalent of almost four medals per million population. The Netherlands has 2.78 medals per million, and Australia 2.38 medals per million.

New Zealand’s nine gold medals is equal to almost two per million population – almost double the rate of second place Latvia.

Before the games began, Paralympics NZ said it aimed for 18 medals in total, though the target included 12 golds.

New Zealand sent 31 athletes to the Games. So far, New Zealand has retained the title of top medals per capita, achieved in London four years ago. The competition ends on 19 September.

On the traditional overall medal table, New Zealand ranks eighth.
