He kākano āhau i ruia mai i Rangiātea
I am a seed which was sewn in the heavens of Rangiatea.

Great things grow from small beginnings and the seed of Hawaiki TŪ which was planted only four short years ago in 2012, has today developed into a full-grown professional company of Māori artists specialising in Haka Theatre (Kapa Haka, Māori dance and theatre).

Hawaiki TU’s annual Festival of short works entitled TAKETAKE includes a brand new work entitled He Kakano (seed) which encapsulates the Company’s aim to develop and share new and authentic Māori performance experiences that reflect the spirit of Aotearoa.

The Company’s Directors Kura & Beez Te Waati explain that the work aims “to honour intergenerational connectedness” and they use a quotation from Ranginui Rikirangi-Thomas to illustrate this concept: He onamata te tuarongo, he anamata te whatitoka, he atua te tāhūhū, heoi anö te tangata he pou whakairo, he tukutuku whakairi körero. The rear of the house is made of ancient times, The frontal of the house is made of the future, The ridge pole is made of gods, Mankind are its carved posts and weaved panels, We are merely the continuation of everything they created Working in the multi-disciplinary medium of Haka Theatre the artists of Hawaiki TŪ under the direction of Kura and Beez Ngarino Te Waati seek to share stories that are steeped in Māori mythology but presented in a contemporary light, utilising theatrical technology, film and innovative special effects.
