Asquire Boardriders Team Take Out the SurfAid Cup Manly 2016

ASQUIRE BOARDRIDERS TEAM TAKE OUT THE SURFAID CUP | MANLY 2016

________________________________________

The teams faced a fun south swell for the sixth annual SurfAid Cup on Sydney’s iconic Manly Beach. Treated to 2-3 foot left and right banks, an offshore wind and the sun shining bright, the Asquire Boardriders team squeaked past the team from Citi Frothers in an incredibly tight final. The team from Blackrock were awarded the fundraising trophy.

Fifteen corporate teams raised over $120,000 for humanitarian organisation SurfAid, an absolutely amazing result.

The team of Charlie Lanchester, Jason Collins, Nick Corkill and Ryan Crewe-Brown from Blackrock raised over $27,800 to take out the fundraising competition. They were followed in second place by Westpac, and Perpetual closely in third. It was an absolutely phenomenal effort by all the teams.

All funds raised contribute to SurfAid’s mother and child health programs in remote areas of Indonesia including the Mentawai and Nias islands west of Sumatra, and Sumbawa and Sumba in Eastern Indonesia. Places where hardly anyone but surfers go. “The SurfAid Cup here in Manly is in its sixth year, and the event has raised over $750,000 since its inception. Many of the teams have been with us since the start of the event and we are enormously grateful to all the teams for their outstanding effort in raising funds for SurfAid. We pride ourselves on providing simple, yet effective solutions to complex problems. The funds raised today will provide clean water, access to basic health care and improved nutrition to some of the world’s most vulnerable people that live near iconic surf destinations. Days like today show that surfers can make a real difference and give back to the places they love,” says SurfAid Founder, Dr. Dave Jenkins.

The event is a five-man tag team format, and all the teams pick a pro surfer or legend to join their fundraising team. This year’s line-up of talent was the best yet including Mark “Occy” Occhilupo, Felicity Palmteer, Matt Bemrose, Paige Houden, Toby Martin, Nick Butler and Richie Lovett.

Very impressive surfing in the final by Nick James (Citi Frothers), Austin Ware and Christof Rosenberg (Asquire Boardriders) keeping pace with Mark “Occy” Occhilupo (Westpac) and Nick Carroll and Ben McCartney (Coastal Watch/Surfing World) kept the crowd on their feet. In the end, it came down to the final wave with the team from Asquire Boardriders emerging victorious. Citi Frothers was second followed by Coastal Watch/Surfing World in third and Westpac in fourth.

Newcomers to the SurfAid Cup, the Asquire Boardriders team members were Brent Backhouse, Marcos Rosenberg, Christof Rosenberg and Darcy Crumps. They selected former WQS surfer and pro surf coach, Austin Ware, as their fifth team member.

In a moment he would surely want to forget, Reay MacGuiness of Surfing Lawyers team took out the infamous “Wipeout Award” prize for the best wipeout.
