Air Force Band To Provide Musical Spectacle at Opera House

Flight Lieutenant Simon Brew promises a dynamic show at this year’s Air Force in Concert on Sunday 16th October at 2.30pm.

Formerly the Air Force Proms, the special performance features a wide variety of music for all ages, with military marches, show tunes, melodies from the golden age of film and classical masterworks played by the band’s virtuoso musicians.

Soprano Barbara Graham, is joining the band’s spring extravaganza, direct from appearances in Sweeney Todd, singing show tunes from Porgy and Bess and The Phantom of the Opera.

The concert will not be a sit-down affair because the band’s 65 musicians are playing and moving on their feet during a choreographed second half.

Ravel’s classic Bolero gets special treatment, as each player comes on stage to join in the music. Excerpts from Respighi’s The Pines of Rome showcase the brass.

Along with marches 633 Squadron, Aces High and Dambusters, there will be plenty of manoeuvres as musicians perform music from Game of Thrones and The Incredibles, through to the latest Bruno Mars hit, Uptown Funk.

During 2016 the Air Force Band has played to large crowds at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and ANZAC Day services at Gallipoli.

“We’ve performed to 80,000 people which is a record for us,” says Flight Lieutenant Brew.

“At the Air Force in Concert we’re merging drill work into the show. It’s a fantastic spectacle. The band will be wearing their ceremonial uniforms.”

“A new feature is our salute to the Services segment to celebrate the work of the Air Force.”

Champion piper Flight Sergeant Murray Mansfield, who receives his QSM this month, plays The Gael on stage with the band.

Children’s tickets are $5, seniors/unwaged from $18, and adults from $20, available from Ticketek.
