Wellington synchronised swimmers medal at nationals

PRESS RELEASE FRIDAY 30TH SEPTEMBER

Wellington synchronised swimmers medal at nationals

Wellington Synchronised Swimming won two medals at the 2016 National Championships this week. The competition was held at Bay Wave in Tauranga from Saturday 24th – Tuesday 27th September. Zoe Gasson and Polly Winter won silver in the Aquanaut duet division and Lucia Marrull and Samantha Fowler won bronze in the 12&U duet division. Sophie Janse also joined the team in Tauranga and placed 8th in the Dolphin Figures category.

Club President, Justine Lawson says “The Club has been officially revived”! Over the years the Club has been wound up and then re-started several times. Lawson says “The Club was awarded at these Nationals the Club Spirit Award in recognition of the adversity overcome in the successful revival of the Club”. With the talent in the small group of girls and more and more interest in the sport the Club are expecting to grow significantly this year.

Lawson says “The girls put much of their success down to their amazing coaching team led by French coach, Maud Montgrenier along with part time coaches and former club swimmers; Alice Orchard and Millie Benson. The whole coaching team have supported the girls to quickly come up to a standard of swimming they can all be proud of and be recognised for in the National context.

Synchronised swimming is a hybrid form of swimming, dance, and gymnastics. Lawson says “Synchronised swimming is fantastic for kids as it develops advanced water skills, strength, endurance, flexibility and creative artistry. It also develops personal commitment and strong friendships due to the team work required to perform complex water moves in a precisely synchronised fashion”.

Members of the public who have children interested in synchronised swimming can contact the club through their Facebook page Wellington Synchronised Swimming. The club train at various pools in the Wellington area and term 4 is the perfect time of year to join as the club is currently scouting to build teams for 2017.
