‘A Piece of My Heart’ shares stories of loss, grief and hope

A new book tracing the courage and experiences of parents after the deaths of their beloved children has been launched in Auckland today. Written by bereaved parents ‘A Piece of My Heart – surviving the death of a son or a daughter’ tells their stories of the loss and grief that changed their lives forever.

The writers all met at a Bereaved Parents Support Group established by the North Shore Hospice in 1999, and each chapter in this unique book records seven different experiences of a specific issue that is common to all grieving parents.

“The launch of ‘A Piece of My Heart’ represents a significant milestone on our journey from devastating grief to hope” says one of the writers, Johneen Atkinson. “Our book reflects what we have all gone through, from the first twenty-four hours. In it we trace the impact the loss of our children had on us, we share our feelings throughout the first year, the effects on our families and our relationships, the significance of anniversaries and memorials, the triggers in grief and the value of a support group.”

Editor and author Rae McGregor, and publisher Adrienne Morris have assisted the writers to share their stories of the daily struggle to mend broken hearts, learn with their families to live with their loss and, in time, to celebrate life again. The book represents an invaluable resource for grieving parents, supporters and friends of grieving parents, health professionals and wider communities.
