Kiwis Finish With Top Performances At World Cup

New Zealand competitors finished with a flurry of medals on the final day of the 2016 ITK Taekwon-Do World Cup in Budapest, Hungary.

Sean Neary from the Legacy Club in Mt Albert succeeded with a flying jump which gained him a gold medal in the male black belt specialty while club mate Row Hope scored with a textbook strike to win silver in advanced women’s power test.

Courtney Weir from Papakura won the silver with top technique in the power breaking and Melissa Timperley also representing the Paul M Club in Papakura cleared the flying high side piercing kick in a tightly fought competition for bronze.

Team manager Jenny Church praised the Kiwi competitors determination and for giving themselves good preparation for next year’s world championships in Dublin, Ireland.

“There were some fantastic efforts by the New Zealand contingent which earned us seventh place overall, especially for many of the new competitors who were gaining experience and looking towards the world champs. A total of 27 medals across a range of events and age groups is exciting and confirms that our high performance programme is working.

Over 1800 athletes from 56 nations competed in the world cup with Tauranga’s Frances Lloyd confirmed as the best overall female junior competitor and Alex Petrovich from Palmerston North the best overall male junior competitor.

Results:

Sean Neary (Team Legacy Club, Mt Albert) - gold, male black belt specialty, Courtney Weir (Paul M Club, Papakura) - silver, female black belt power, Row Hope (Team Legacy Club, Mt Albert) - silver, female black belt power (36-45 years), Melissa Timperley (Paul M Club, Papakura) - bronze, female black belt specialty.
