Panthers in Grey Lynn

Thursday, 6 October 2016 1:57 p.m.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Black Panthers and the 45th anniversary of their New Zealand counterpart, the Polynesian Panthers. Celebrations take place on Wednesday 12 and Wednesday 19 October at the Grey Lynn Library with guest speakers from the Polynesian Panthers themselves and a screening of their documentary all leading up to a Skype session with the Black Panthers where a special “happy anniversary” message will be played in which all in attendance on both days can be part of.

The celebrations on Wednesday 12th start with an opening Karakia at 11.30am with local Grey Lynn Polynesian Panthers such as Tigilau Ness, New Zealand musician and father of Che Fu, telling their stories from midday onwards. On Wednesday 19th, the celebrations start with more Panther members telling their stories such as Will ‘Ilolahia, a founding member of the Polynesian Panthers, at 2pm. The evening celebrations kick off with the screening of the Panther documentary at 6.30pm, followed by drinks and the one-of-a-kind Skype message with the Black Panthers to start their 50th anniversary celebrations off on a high.

The events are not to be missed and spaces will fill up quick with limited seats available. Be in to win an autographed copy of the Polynesian Panther book just by booking a space.

To book a space, please email mrs@firstfound.org or contact the Grey Lynn Library 09 374 1314.
