Sparky Sails to Home Ground Win

Sparky Sails to Home Ground Win

Dunstan Casebrooke Lomond lived up to his name today in the Bayley’s Real Estate Horse Grand Prix at the APL Showjumping Waikato Festival of Jumping at Mystery Creek.

Sparky fair flew around the technical John Vallance-designed course, notching ones to finish with a clean slate of the 15 starters.

The class was run as a two round competition – similar to a World Cup – with four combinations going clear in the opener and those with eight faults or less coming back.

Laurie (Mystery Creek) was the first clear round rider to jump in the second but left nothing to chance.

“I was fast but not super fast,” she said. “It was going to be up to those who followed me.”

Sparky has a tendency to put his head down and play when jumping, which he did at the fifth fence.

“So he didn’t actually see that jump. After that he did anything he could not to touch the fences. He showed just how good he is,” she said of the eight-year-old grey stallion. “He was such a good boy.”

Laurie has no doubt this horse could go far.

“I am just hoping you can actually have two horses of a lifetime,” she said. “He has been amazing here (at the Mystery Creek Indoors). I am very pleased with him.”

Laurie was also third aboard Dunstan On The Point Eve who had a rail in the second round. Glen Beal (Auckland) and Sacramento left all the rails up over the two rounds but picked up a single time fault in the second round.

In the Equissage Pony Grand Prix, Emma Watson (Morrinsville) and Olivia Dalton (Auckland) again went head to head.

Eighteen started the class with Dalton bringing Simply Samantha HH and Watson bringing both Phantom Warrior and Fun House back for the jump-off.

It could hardly have been closer, with both girls double clear and just .01 of a second between them. But in the end, Watson took the win on Phantom Warrior in 31.32 seconds, with Dalton second in 31.33. Watson had a rail aboard Fun House to take third.
