ASB Auckland Marathon Competitors Raise More than One Million Dollars for Charity

The ASB Auckland Marathon is more than just a festival of running, through the generosity and determination of its participants, it is also the provider of an incredible $1.25 million (and still counting) raised for a total of 63 charities*.

This year 1,426 signed up as ‘charity runners’ during registration and raised money for a charity of their choice.

The charity fundraising programme is a key initiative in the annual event and is coordinated between IRONMAN, The Realbuzz Group and online fundraising partner Everyday Hero.

Ironman Oceania Managing Director Dave Beeche says the organizing team are extremely proud of the fundraising aspect to a hugely popular event.

“We believe in leaving an ongoing legacy in the communities in which we host our events,” says Mr Beeche. “The ASB Auckland Marathon has a proud tradition over many years of raising incredible amounts of money for worthy causes and charities in the local and wider New Zealand communities and has again in 2016 done itself proud in those achievements.

“It is with the support and involvement of our athletes that we could enable such large donations to a wide ranging group of charities. It adds tremendously to the overall event experience, particularly for the 1,426 competitors who signed up and achieved their own personal goals, and at the same time had the satisfaction of helping others through their participation.”

ASB Executive General Manager Marketing and Communications Roger Beaumont says ASB is delighted to be involved in the iconic event, and to see so many runners working hard to raise money for their chosen charities.

“The 2016 ASB Auckland Marathon was a resounding success and we couldn’t be prouder to see more than $1 million dollars raised for charities. ASB’s official charity for this year’s ASB Auckland Marathon was Starship Foundation and we were overwhelmed to see runners put in the hard yards, not only for marathon training but for fundraising too,” Mr Beaumont says.

Starship Foundation is thrilled with the total figure raised at this year’s event, with their donations going towards the Clown Doctors.

“We are so grateful to all 101 of our passionate Team Starship runners. They ran hard and they fundraised brilliantly in support of our national children’s hospital,” says Starship Foundation Chief Executive Brad Clark.

The 2016 ASB Auckland Marathon was run on October 30 and attracted close to 14,000 people across five races: ASB Auckland Marathon, Barfoot & Thompson Half-Marathon, John West 12km Traverse, Heart Foundation 5km and Kids Marathon.

ASB Run Down the Rate

In addition to the more than $1.25 million raised for charity, 12 families from across New Zealand received a market-leading home loan rate through ASB’s Run Down the Rate competition. They received a two-year fixed home loan rate of 2.20% p.a, based on the winning 2016 ASB Auckland Marathon finish time of two hours and 20 minutes, run by Oska Inkster-Baynes.

*33 charities nominated by Realbuzz in the Golden Charity Programme, 30 further charities were chosen by other competitors through the Everyday Hero fundraising site.
