A Festival of Film under the Stars

Black Barn OpenAir Cinema – A Festival of Film under the Stars

Hawke’s Bay is gearing up for its 13th OpenAir Cinema season starting on December 27th at Black Barn Vineyards in Havelock North. Doris and Urs Blum, the festival organisers, have chosen a variety of movies to satisfy a broad range of film appetites.

The festival kicks off with a bang and a roar: Chasing Great; NZ’s highest-grossing documentary on All Black and World Cup legend, NZ’s favourite son, Richie McCaw.

Music is the main topic in two of the other nine upcoming movies. Meryl Streep delivers an Oscar worthy performance in Florence Foster Jenkins, telling us the true story of a New York heiress and socialite who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great opera singer.

The Last Waltz does not need much of an introduction, besides stating: “It started as a Concert. It became a Celebration. Now it is a Legend.”

The Big Bike Film Night 2016 brings the best cycling short films from around the world. They may be about road cycling, mountain biking, BMX, adventure based, documentaries, humorous or something entirely different; but they must show bicycles in some form.

From renowned director Peter Bogdanovich comes the funny screwball comedy She’s funny that way - the hilarious story of a coincidence that was meant to be.

Based on the best-selling novel by Rosalie Ham, the bittersweet, comedy-drama The Dressmaker is set in early 1950s Australia. Kate Winslet plays a beautiful and talented misfit. After many years working as a dressmaker in exclusive Parisian fashion houses, she returns home to a tiny middle-of-nowhere town to right the wrongs of the past.

Taika Waititi takes us again on a most enjoyable ride with his latest masterpiece and NZ’s largest grossing local film, Hunt for the Wilderpeople. This is the perfect movie for a fun night out under the stars – come watch it again, and again!

The names Audrey Hepburn and Holly Golightly have become synonymous since the dazzling romantic comedy Breakfast at Tiffany’s was translated to the screen from Truman Capote's best-selling novel.

Two countries, two loves, one heart - on the final night Brooklyn tells us the story of a young woman, who moves from small town Ireland to Brooklyn, NY and is torn between the two countries.

The season will run over nine nights from December 27th to 30th and from January 2nd to 6th.

“Hawke’s Bay is climatically perfectly suited for movies under the stars. The past seasons have been extremely successful. Everybody loves the experience of watching movies on a big screen nestled in the picturesque vineyard setting of the amphitheatre”, Urs Blum states. "It has perfect acoustics, great sight lines, the best of technology installed and it offers views to die for, especially at dusk."

Moviegoers can relax on grassed terraces, sip a glass of wine with friends, enjoy a nibble from the onsite caterers or bring their own picnic, and watch the sun set over Hawke’s Bay. It is the ultimate outdoor experience: great films, great technology, great sound, great food, and great company under the stars.
