Stage adaptation of The 13-Storey Treehouse in Auckland

13-Storeys of Fun as Andy Griffith’s Bestseller Comes to Life on Stage in New Zealand for the First Time in 2017!

Auckland Live presents a CDP Kids production
THE 13-STOREY TREEHOUSE
A play by Richard Tulloch
Adapted from the book by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton

Auckland audiences will have the chance to experience the stage adaptation of THE 13-STOREY TREEHOUSE, Andy Griffiths’ and Terry Denton’s best-selling children’s book, when it plays at the Bruce Mason Centre from 18 to 22 April 2017 as part of its premiere touring season of New Zealand.

The fantastical adventure has been brought to life on stage by award-winning playwright Richard Tulloch (The Book of Everything, Bananas in Pyjamas) for children aged 6 to 12 – and adults too!

Who wouldn't want to live in a treehouse? Especially a 13-Storey Treehouse that has everything, including a bowling alley, a secret underground laboratory, self-making beds, a vegetable vaporiser and a marshmallow machine that shoots marshmallows into your mouth whenever you're hungry. Andy and Terry live there, create stories together and have a series of completely nutty adventures.

Today’s the day they’re going to bring those stories to the stage in their first play – except they forgot to write it! And where will they find flying cats, a mermaid, a sea monster, an invasion of monkeys, and a giant gorilla? Luckily they have some friends to help out, a box of costumes and props, some pretty awesome technology and a truckload of imagination!

Under the artistic direction of Julian Louis (Standing Room Only, Wilde Tales), the all-New Zealand cast use physical theatre, puppetry and music to bring the much-loved book to life.

Audiences and critics alike have fallen in love with the show, with The Australian describing it as “a cheerful and brisk production…that has the kids engaged and amused from the outset.”

“It’s got the same feeling as the book, which is all the fun of inventing things and creating them and then them going out of control” says author Andy Griffiths, who has won over 50 children’s choice awards and been on the New York Times bestseller list. “There’s a lot of joy and fun.”

Auckland Live is committed to offering a wide range of events and shows especially for families and young people. Head of Programming and Presenter Services, Bernie Haldane, says she is delighted to be bringing such high profile, quality children’s theatre to Auckland over the April school holidays.

“Children love The 13-Storey Treehouse book, and we’re thrilled they’ll get the opportunity to see this hilarious story come to life on stage,” says Ms Haldane. “This is kid-paced madness at its best!”
