Anthesis Art Gallery Unveiling the portrait of LaQuisha

Anthesis Art Gallery Unveiling the portrait of LaQuisha

Dressing Up to Be Yourself - December opening at Anthesis Gallery

Wellington, December 16th, 2016, 6-9 pm

Anthesis Gallery holds its monthly opening this time featuring works dedicated to costume, nudes and thoughts around what our true self really is. Are we layered and buried behind bands of self invention, screens of protection and prescribed coverings? Or is our atmosphere, all a part of who we are? Why are some elements accepted and others - questioned? How much is our appearance about ourselves, and how much is it about our need to be liked or necessity to interface with others? The opening will also feature small florals and still lives as well as prints of the themed paintings - perfect for unusual Christmas presents.

About Anthesis Gallery

The gallery is a new small business run by Tatyana Kulida who decided to open her gallery in order to bring her work to the public. Anthesis Gallery is different to most other galleries in that it is a place where art is intimately connected to its creator. The word Atelier comes from French and means a workshop: this gallery is a studio where Tatyana creates her work. The work is very much different from what can be found in the existing galleries due to its traditional nature but also in the approach to art making. Tatyana paints her subjects from life using natural light which results in a very slow creation process but offers a more personal and dimensional end result. The gallery also includes works by her husband, Steffen Schubert. Both Tatyana and Steffen have gone through 4 years of training in the old masters tradition in Florence, Italy where they then taught. Anthesis Gallery will be open by appointment and further, it will open its doors once a month on a Friday night to showcase latest works and bring in the public for an opening reception.

The Gallery/Atelier has 3 main purposes in mind. Outside her personal projects where she explores personal themes, Tatyana paints portrait commissions for clients in New Zealand and abroad. Portraiture is at the center of Tatyana's work as she has a tremendous interest in people and their stories. Her gallery is one of the very few places where a client can come and sit for their portrait where it's composed and created from life. The gallery is set up where a client can comfortably sit, right in the center of town, in the privacy of Tatyana's beautiful studio. Continuing the teaching function of an atelier, Tatyana leads two student groups to whom she offers academic training passing on the French Academic tradition she has studied and taught in Florence, Italy - but adapted to the goal and schedules of the Wellington students. Tatyana is determined to keep the student group sizes small to maximize painting time. Atelier offers ongoing training in the Academic methods as well as week long intensive workshops. The next workshop: December 18-22 is focused on Figure Drawing from live model.
