Day two wrapped up for NZL sailors at the Sailing World Cup Final in Melbourne

The Sailing World Cup Final in Melbourne is well underway with New Zealand sailors competing across seven of the fleets.

New Zealand 49er pair Isaac McHardie and William McKenzie put another strong foot forward on day two to retain the lead in their fleet following three races (7,5,1) which reflected their improvement over the day. Other New Zealand pairs Josh Porebski and Trent Rippey, and Nick Egnot-Johnson and Jack Rogers are now sitting in 5th and 9th respectively.

Nacra 17 pair Olivia Mackay and Micah Wilkinson crept up the scoreboard to sit in 2nd overall following three strong races with a string of 2,3,1 results.

Two New Zealand teams over in the 470 Mens fleet are within a few points of each other with Sam Barnett and Zak Merton in 11th, (pictured above, Sailing Energy/World Sailing) just ahead of Markus Somerville and Taylor Balogh in 12th.

470 coach Nathan Handley says the sailing conditions were great in Melbourne today for the two races completed on their course.

“The wind came up from 3-6 knots in race three to 9-14 knots for race four. The boys are learning lots, and are getting great insight into 470 racing at a top level,” he comments.

The Sailing World Cup in Melbourne is currently being held at the St Kilda Sailing Precinct, on the St Kilda foreshore until December 11.
