May Contain Sex Scenes

‘In the beginning sex happened to me.

Then it happened with me and now I'm dreaming up my sexual inventory…’

May Contain Sex Scenes is a vibrant, mischievous, liberating physical breakdown of our social taboos of female sexual experience. The stories at the heart of the work are personal, empowering and an invitation to anyone with a genuine interest in closing the orgasm gap.

Directed by Bop Murdoch and performed by Sabrina Martin, May Contain Sex Scenes is Pat-A-Cake Productions' contribution to the 2017 NZ Fringe Festival. It will be performed in a top-secret location in the heart of Wellington City, which will be revealed upon booking. Audiences can expect an intimate, interactive experience which is simultaneously gentle and electric. The performance will be held in promenade style, with Martin providing a guided experience for the audience.

May Contain Sex Scenes aims to shed light on confusing sexual attitudes and combat the social silence surrounding our sexual fantasies and experiences. Interviews conducted by Martin have revealed that most individuals today experience major alienation and confusion. Martin's performance aims to break these barriers down by instigating conversations that demystify pleasure and promote healthy, fulfilling sex lives that we are not ashamed to openly and honestly talk about.

The audience will build on the experience each night to create an accumulative overall season,  emblematic of the momentum from any challenging aspect of our personal lives by opening conversations, sharing insights and normalising anything that has festered behind closed doors.

Bop Murdoch has been directing since 2009 when she won Best New NZ Director at the National Theatre Federation for The Conspiracy of X. As part of the 2016 NZ Fringe Festival Murdoch directed The Trickle Down Effect and The Offensive Nipple Show, the latter of which went on to be awarded with Runner-up for Best In Fringe as well as the Melbourne Tiki Tour Award at The 2016 NZ Fringe Festival; and Best Theatre at The Sydney Fringe Festival.

Sabrina Martin spent time performing in the UK and Denmark before returning to Aotearoa in 2014. An actor and theatre-maker, Martin has worked with various NZ companies including Brother’s and Sister’s Collective, PlayShop, and The Lord Lackbeards. In Europe she performed with critically acclaimed theatre company Cantabile 2 (Denmark) whose intimate, "human-specific" theatrical style has significantly inspired her current work. A Fringe Addict at heart, Martin participated in five projects in the 2016 NZ Fringe Festival; and at the 2015 NZ Fringe produced Scratch Nacht which won Most Innovative Concept, as well as performing in PlayShop's 10 Things I Hate About Us which was awarded with Best Improv.
