The Institute of Refuge in Art

The Institute of Refuge in ArtEvent Page

Greetings, you have discovered The Institute of Refuge in Art.

Occupying the cultural metropolis of Newtown, we are a system for Refugee advocacy through discussion and the transformation of discarded artwork.

Welcome.

This is an art show where various local Wellington artists will repaint old discarded paintings that have been donated to our Vinnies Op Shops. Bringing new life and a new fresh take on old abandoned works.

Not only is this a quirky take on an art show, this is a chance to educate a new local crowd on the opportunities and benefits of charitable volunteer work available (whether that is volunteering time, resources or donations). Work specifically around helping and welcoming Refugees.

Opening night will be held on Saturday 25 February, 6 – 9pm at Black Coffee, Newtown (the art will be on show until Friday 3 March).

Alongside the normal opening night shenanigans of food, drinks, music and art, we will have speakers from various refugee agencies briefly talk about what they do. So far we have Change Makers Refugee Forum, Red Cross, Vinnies Wellington, Pomegranate Kitchen and Ibrahim (Ibrahim will be speaking about his experience coming in under the Refugee Quota) speaking on the night.

With the current international unrest regarding immigration and refugees it is more important than ever for our Wellington community to be aware of the work that goes on in their backyard.
