Mary Jane Walker is a New Zealand based author who is writing a series of travel novels. Her debut book, A Maverick Traveller, which was released in January 2017 is currently ranked at 125 on the Amazon Best Sellers list in the specialty Adventure category. Her books detail her adventures around the globe with a focus on adventure and solo travel, reaching out to people who like to do things differently.
A Maverick Traveller is a compilation of her travels until 2016, climbing mountains (Ben Nevis, Mont Blanc, Mount Everest Base Camp and more), exploring New Zealand and trekking along many of the world’s great trails. What sets this book apart from the rest is the fact it is accompanied by extensive photography, maps completed with historical, political and cultural elements.
Mary Jane Walker has a Masters in Politics and a Degree in Journalism; her books take a ‘Maverick’ ideology with her writing, travelling rather than being a tourist. Her books talk in detail of routes, culture, histories and political elements of each country she has visited which bring a different and unique aspect to her writing.

Mary Jane
Walker is a New Zealand author based in both Queenstown and
Auckland, with her true love being travel. She has written
about this long love affair in her travel books a series of
travel memoirs starting with A Maverick Traveller – her
first book published in 2017.
Mary Jane sat down last
winter to write about her travels in a single book, but
found she had so many stories it wouldn’t fit into just
one! She now has almost six books about her travel and
adventures from all over the world. She has worked in
education, politics, journalism, real estate and travel –
which is now her favourite part-time job!
The reason for
her dedication to travelling, exploration and adventure?
Simple - it’s science. The DRD-4 gene is something quite a
few of us carry – even though we may not know it! It is
known as the ‘wanderlust gene’ – the love of
exploration, discoveries and a natural curiosity in
everything. It’s also why she feels that ‘a Maverick’
is the best way to describe herself.
