St Leonards School Art School proves popular with artists
Record numbers of artists have entered the
annual St Leonards Art Exhibition and Sale which runs from
Friday March 24 to March 26.
Art sale organiser
Rachel Foster said she was delighted with the number of
artists who had entered this year.
“We have more than
60 artists already and more coming in. It is great to have
so many well- known artists and new pieces from up and
coming talents. The calibre of art is very high,” she
said.
The event has been going for many years and has gained a reputation for its quality art. This year is no exception with well known artists such as, John Toomer. Anna Reid, Sam Foley, Brian Stewart, Chris Flavell, Simon Kann, Manu Berry, Doug Hart, Graham Fletcher, Inge Doesburg, Nigel Wilson as well as work from local emerging artists.
“We are excited to not only be exhibiting work from painters but we have other artistic mediums in our exhibition including, work from photographers, printmakers and sculptors.”
This year people who are unable to attend the art exhibition will still be able to buy works. “We will be able to take credit card payments which we hope will increase our sales this year,” Ms Foster said.
Another feature of this year’s sale will be
art created by the children at St Leonards School. As well
as art from adults, the children will have a section where
people can view the art they created through local business
Gone Potty.
“The children had a fun day with Bridget from Gone Potty and they made a piece to exhibit at the sale. The pieces are not for sale but it enabled the children to be part of an art exhibition.” Ms Foster said.
“The children had sold their artwork to their parents and raised $200 for the school, which helps the children feel part of the fundraising, and also gives the students an opportunity to show off their artistic skills. It is interesting to note that not only are the children exhibiting but in some cases their parents as well, which reflects the diverse and creative community of St Leonards.”
St Leonards School principal Jo Wilson said the art sale was the school’s main fundraiser and was a good opportunity for the children to see work by artists they could aspire to emulate.
If people want to buy art, but cannot attend the exhibition, photos of the art will be displayed on St Leonards School website as they become available, and on the Facebook page, St Leonards Art Exhibition and Sale. Sales will be accepted from 7pm Friday March 24. Contact Carmen Houlahan to purchase art if not at the sale, on 0273108179.
