60 new New Zealand works to be presented at annual performing arts market

More than 60 new New Zealand works will be pitched and previewed at New Zealand’s annual Arts Market, from Monday 13 – Wednesday 15 March, at Auckland Live. The 3-day event brings together more than 170 local and international arts professionals, emerging and established artists and producers, and presenters from venues, festivals and touring agencies.

A vital forum for promoting New Zealand work, the Arts Market was launched in 1999, with the Entertainment Venues Association of NZ (EVANZ), and is produced by the Performing Arts Network of New Zealand (PANNZ). PANNZ Chair, James Wilson, says he hopes the Arts Market will, “nurture, develop and support new voices and new ideas, and create opportunities for those voices to reach audiences right across the country.”

Capability building forums at the Arts Market centre around the theme of ‘Working in Partnership’, initiating conversations, developing long-term relationships, acquiring skills in joint-venturing and understanding industry trends. PANNZ General Manager, Louise Gallagher says the theme reflects, “the collaborative approach that arts organisations are taking to make tours happen.”

Arts Market Producer Celia Walmsley says, “work will be showcased through pitching sessions, showcase opportunities, and the ‘Breakfast of Bright Ideas’ sessions” supported by Baycourt and Q Theatre. Ticketmaster in collaboration with the Auckland Arts Festival will host a dedicated Music Showcase in the “atmospheric space of the Auckland Arts Festival Spiegeltent.”

Forum presenters include; Carla Van Zon and David Inns of the Auckland Arts Festival alongside Shelagh Magadza from the New Zealand Festival, presenting on the topic of collaboration. Karen Koren (Gilded Balloon), Sam Gough (Summerhall), Edinburgh PR legend Anna Arthur and The Scotsman journalist Tim Cornwell, plus at number of New Zealand artists who have taken work to Edinburgh, join a panel discussion hosted by Creative New Zealand about presenting work at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

PANNZ General Manager Louise Gallagher and Tour-Makers Senior Producer Drew James will present a proposed plan for touring in 2017/2018 and PANNZ Marketing & Audience Development Manager, Stephanie Richardson, will talk to Tour-Makers National Audience Development Strategy and Framework for performing arts spaces.

This year EVANZ is sponsoring practical forums and workshops about partnering in Joint-Venture arrangements to make tours happen, and leading the discussion around what presenters (venues & festivals) need and want from the venues they work with.

James Wilson (PANNZ Chair) invites delegates to use the three days of Arts Market 2017, “to seek out and celebrate a multiplicity of stories to share with audiences this year and beyond.”
