Kite-surfer and social entrepreneur Susi Mai is heading to New Zealand to present Red Bull TV’s daily coverage of The Ultimate Waterman, taking place in Southland from April 1-9.

German-born, but raised and based in the Dominican Republic, Susi Mai is one of the most decorated and inspirational female kite-boarders in the world, winning the Red Bull King (or in this case, Queen) of the Air Maui for three straight years.

Her passion for the ocean has extended to an extraordinary career off the water. As well as being a regular face for Red Bull TV, Susi’s company Mai Tai Global is marshalling the support of extreme innovators, entrepreneurs and athletes to support environmental causes related to the ocean. She regularly collaborates with long-time friend Sir Richard Branson and was recently on Necker Island when former US President Barack Obama learned to kite-surf.

In linking the tech and business worlds with the extreme sports community Susi has found many similarities. “There is a strong correlation between success in business and in extreme sports and events like The Ultimate Waterman” she said. “In both, you have to persevere, make it through ups and downs and keep your head in the game.”

Having visited New Zealand many years ago, Susi is excited about what The Ultimate Waterman has to offer and being able to showcase the event through Red Bull TV’s platforms. “Crossover competitions like The Ultimate Waterman find out who has the raw talent, strength and determination to succeed,’ she said “because they’re competing in the most diverse environment, the ocean, the athletes mental strength is key as the brain adapts to the conditions. It’s about far more than physical strength” Mai said.

The Ultimate Waterman sees eight athletes from around the world chasing the best surf and conditions around the region to compete in eight events. The events are; big wave paddle in surfing, outrigger, longboard, shortboard, stand-up paddle, SUP endurance, underwater strength run and swim, and prone paddleboarding.

Susi Mai will present five 10-minute shows, produced by Red Bull Media House on location during The Ultimate Waterman, which will play on Red Bull TV’s daily Bullet Points show from April 6-10, as well as its social pages and You Tube channels. It will take The Ultimate Waterman to a huge global audience, capturing all facets of the event and showcase the unique environment Southland has to offer.
