Tiki Taane Mahuta is a story about love and tragic loss. When a fatal car crash takes away the love of Karen’s life, and the father of her unborn child, it is up to the next generation to repair the rift between broken families. Karen’s son, guided by his father’s ancestral lineage, is able to forge a path of forgiveness and bring the families together via their future progeny. Tatau pounamu. A gift of reconciliation and new beginnings.

Both the show’s narrative and soundtrack emerge from award-winning Tiki Taane albums Past, Present, Future and In The World of Light. Tiki Taane and Sam Trevethick play live, supporting some of New Zealand’s best performers from the worlds of kapa haka, dance and theatre. The staging also features audiovisual projection from Aotearoa’s leading multimedia designers.

Gray hopes that those who come to experience the show leave with an awareness of the strength they can harness if they reach out and connect to their own whakapapa or family line.

For Tiki Taane, the show takes the music industry into a new space.

“In Christchurch, I was absolutely blown away… I just had to be involved somehow. Tāne already narrated an incredibly moving story through dance and kapa haka, introducing live musical elements will elevate the journey even more.”

“This show will be a career highlight for me, something that I’m excited to share with the world.

Tiki Taane Mahuta is presented with key support from Te Rūnanga o Ngai Tahu and Creative New Zealand.
