International artist residency forum in the capital

Wellington City Council and the Goethe Institut are proud to support the third annual artist residency forum, International Connections, at City Gallery Wellington on Wednesday 12 April at 5.30pm.

The forum will include a panel discussion chaired by Melanie Oliver, Senior Curator at the Dowse, with local and international artists talking about their residency experiences at this free public event.

The artist line-up this year is Berlin based performance artist, Janine Eisenächer, the 2017 Goethe Institut Artist in Residence staying at Bolton Street Cottage. French artist, Soraya Rhofir, Te Whare Hera artist in residence, and local sound artist, Daniel Beban, who is just back from Red Gate Gallery in Beijing, China.

Mayor and Arts Portfolio leader, Justin Lester, says residency programmes are a great springboard for emerging artists.

“Visiting other locations and cultures give artists an opportunity to really expand their creative horizons, and be inspired by new environments and experiences,” says Mayor Lester.

This year artists will discuss why they participate in residencies, their achievements and challenges, what they leave behind and what they take away, and how they help position Wellington as an internationally connected capital city.

Each year, Wellington City Council and the Asia NZ foundation select a Wellington-based artist to take part in a residency in China. To find out more go to wcc.govt.nz/ware.
