Wellington Set to ‘Pass Go’

Wellington Set to ‘Pass Go’ in World’s Most Popular Board Game

Wellingtonians will no longer need to play games or buy property on the streets of London, with the announcement that New Zealand’s capital is to be immortalised with its very own official MONOPOLY board.

Kiwis can now look forward to playing the world’s most loved game on iconic streets and landmarks throughout Wellington.

Before the dice is rolled, Wellingtonians will have a chance to say what hot properties they would like to see on the first-ever Wellington MONOPOLY board. MONOPOLY will be consulting locals to decide which landmarks will trade places with the famous London locales.

Today at the iconic Cable Car, Wellington’s proudest resident, The Mayor of Wellington, Justin Lester, has become the first to ‘Like’ the Wellington MONOPOLY Facebook page. Lester has also shared his thoughts on what he would like to see on the board.

“As New Zealand’s capital, Wellington deserves to be recognised in the world’s most famous game,” Lester says.

While not wanting to pre-empt public opinion or what property may secure the prized blue Mayfair position, the Mayor nominated Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington Harbour) as his best prospect for the top spot on the board.

Wellington streets and our natural environment are defining features of our vibrant creative culture and city. Whether it’s our major landmarks like the Beehive, The Cable Car or Te Papa, our laneways, quaint buildings or magnificent gardens; Wellington is spoilt for choice.”

He adds, “I encourage everyone to have their say on which Wellington streets and city icons should replace those famous London names like Pall Mall, Fleet Street and The Strand… I’ll be having mine.”

From today until 15 August, Wellington MONOPOLY enthusiasts are invited to suggest top properties on the Wellington MONOPOLY Facebook page or by email.

The two most popular properties will replace the prestigious dark blue Mayfair and Park Lane positions from the original London MONOPOLY board. The game will also include Wellington themed ‘Community Chest’ and ‘Chance’ playing cards.

Winning Moves, manufacturers of the official Wellington version of MONOPOLY under license from Hasbro, says the game will be on retail shelves in November.

Winning Moves Managing Director, Reid Herbert, says: “We are looking forward to receiving input from fans far and wide, so we can ensure Wellington MONOPOLY is a true reflection of all that we love about the capital.”

“The spirit and shape of this customised edition will remain the same as the traditional game, but now you will be able to buy and own your favourite Wellington landmarks with MONOPOLY money,” Herbert adds.

MONOPOLY first hit the shelves in 1935 – since then it has been played by more than 1 billion people. Today it is played in 111 countries and enjoyed in over 43 different languages.

The new MONOPOLY: Wellington Edition will be available in November from leading toy retailers across New Zealand.
