SoccerPractise's Electro-Indie-Waiata ‘Amene’

How SoccerPractise are Redrawing NZ’s Musical Map with their Electro-Indie-Waiata ‘Amene’.

Auckland, New Zealand-based electronic group SoccerPractise are proud to present their newest single and music video, 'Amene'.

'A beautifully synthed up version of the waiata 'Piriponotia' - Radio New Zealand.

'The works of SoccerPractise aren't your usual waiata but mixing things up is kind of the point.' - Newshub.

'Beneath the vocals lies a low-key loop that helps to drive the song forward. The results are sublime and it easily makes for the highlight of their modest catalogue so far.' - The Spinoff.

Based in Tāmaki Makaurau, SoccerPractise are receiving widespread plaudits for their unusual bilingual and multimedia-driven musical performances.

The group’s singer, Geneva Alexander-Marsters, performs in both Te Reo Māori and English, while ‘visual musician’ Kim Newall interprets the group’s music live onstage, projecting graphics and hand-drawn elements onto the band as they perform.

‘Amene’ reworks the lyrics of the traditional waiata ‘Piriponotia’, by the late Morvin Simon. The lyrics of the song advocate holding fast to the ways of the tipuna (ancestors) in order to encourage enlightenment and understanding among those living today.

SoccerPractise say, “'Amene' takes elements of electronic music, indie rock and traditional waiata and puts them though the SoccerPractise grinder to produce something hypnotic and new.”
