Lithographic Printing exhibition to open at Toitū

Dunedin (Monday, 14 August 2017) – On Friday 18 August, a new art exhibition entitled Sketched in Stone: Lithographic Printing in Dunedin will open at Toitū Otago Settlers Museum.

Lithographs are artworks printed from a stone surface and this exhibition features works dating from gold rush times through until the early 20th century.

Curator Peter Read says, “This exhibition comprises around 40 original lithographic prints and around 80 in digital format. Featured works range from early monochrome maps, botanical drawings and portraits to multi-coloured landscapes and advertising prints.

“As well as being an exhibition about lithography, some of its Dunedin practitioners and examples of their amazing talent, it is also about the colourful characters portrayed in the images – including a range of weird and wonderful performers,” he says.

Mr Read will discuss the exhibition in his curators talk on Sunday 20 August at 2pm.
