Mt Wellington Roller Skaters Win at NZ Nationals, and Head to Oceania Champs

Mt Wellington Artistic Roller Skating Club is having a very successful season, with both a National and International focus.

At the recent 2017 New Zealand Roller Sports Artistic Championships held in Rotorua, Mt Wellington Club had 19 skaters competing across all skill levels, and from ages 8 to adult.

The medal haul for the club skaters was impressive, with 13 National Titles and Gold medals gained, 7 Silver, and 5 Bronze medals. Mt Wellington Club was placed second overall in points, from 11 competing clubs from around New Zealand.

Other national awards to Mt Wellington Club members included Anna Harris, who was presented with the Oscar Trophy, awarded to the best performance at the National Championships. Patricia Carrascosa won the Volunteer of the Year award.

During the National Championships, it was also announced that five Mt Wellington Club skaters have been selected to represent New Zealand at the 2017 Oceania Championships that will be held in September in Australia. These expert skaters are Anna Harris, Hannah Calderon, Joanne Heley, Macarena Carrascosa and Mercedes Carrascosa.

Additionally, Rachael Parkinson from Mt Wellington Club has been appointed as the team coach for the New Zealand team at the 2017 Oceania Championships.

You may have seen our skaters on the TV One Breakfast show during the National Championships, where artistic skating was featured throughout the morning. It is a fun and exciting sport for all ages, girls and boys.

If you are interested in trying out artistic skating, come along to a Learn To Skate session at Skateland 66 Mountain Road Mt Wellington - every Saturday morning at 10:15, for only $9 (including skate hire). The coaches include our top skaters, so it is an excellent opportunity to take up a new sport and be trained by the best in New Zealand!
