Filthy Friends - Invitation
Filthy Friends are a group of extremely talented, extremely accomplished, like-minded individuals that includes Corin Tucker of Sleater Kinney, and ex-REM guitarist Peter Buck. The supergroup originally formed in 2012 to perform David Bowie covers, and their first release was titled Despierta, which is Spanish for "awake", and criticises current President of the United States Donald Trump. Now, the awake/woke group have released their powerful debut album, Invitation, and it's absolutely raw and unfiltered. Exuding exuberant energy at the same time as heavy strokes of experience painting a darker picture of head and heart. Invitation is a swaggering and tough album that leaks mutual appreciation of each artist's sk ill and experience, forging all your old favourites into a lustrous new sound.

Win yourself a physical copy of Invitation every morning this week at 8:15am on the Harraways Oat Singles Breakfast!

micronism - inside a quiet mind (reissue)
inside a quiet mind by micronism is perhaps New Zealand's best electronic album. Released in 1998 and recorded over two years in makeshift studios on gear bought and borrowed, Denver McCarthy (also known as micronism) made a visionary album. Stepping through deep house, glitch, and techno, inside a quiet mind isn't a collection of songs, it is a complete album. It explores the late 90s Auckland rave scene through the lens of McCarthy in his late teens/twenties, and shifts within that frame appropriately. This inward and outward reflection creates a landscape that is both internal and immaterial, in stark contras t to the very concrete Berlin and Detroit scenes that were giant establishments of the era. inside a quiet mind holds the unique position of sounding of the time, but also outside of it. The album boasts hard-stomping drums and bass measured by dreamy, enveloping synth layers.

Win yourself a digital copy of inside a quiet mind (reissue) every day this week at 5:15pm on Drive!

TUNE IN - 91FM Dunedin :: LIVE STREAM :: PAST SHOWS :: PODCASTS

This week on the Radio One Harraways Oat Singles Breakfast Show with Jamie Green

Monday: The New Zealand Young Writers Festival is almost upon us and it promises to be an event not to be missed. Aaron Hawkins was here at 8:30am to fill us in on all the goings on in the jampacked programme of 16 events held at five venues over four days. Listen to the podcast!

Tuesday: Comedian/actor/writer Tom Sainsbury is leading the charge in contemporary NZ humour as he combines eerily accurate impersonations of everyday kiwis and local politicians through the lens of Snapchat vlogging. He joins Chris Armstrong at 8:30am to talk about his brand of humour and The Idea Factory Workshop at the NZ Young Writers Festival. Radio One's resident film critic, Simon Kingsley-Holmes, joins us at 9:30am to give us the rundown on what's good at the cinemas this week.

Wednesday: At 8:30am we talk to author Rhydian Thomas ahead of his appearance at the New Zealand Young Writers Festival to share his novel Milk Island. The book is set as the 2023 election approaches, and features four cruel and unusual stories, exposing the inner workings at the heart of Milk Island (formerly New Zealand's South Island), where patriotism and prosperity trumps all else, and life matters little unless you're Milky Moo, the nation's favourite cow. Following all this at 9:30am we have another excellent installment of Just Landed.

Thursday: We have a double dose of the New Zealand Young Writers Festival this morning! At 8:30am we talk to Laura Borrowdale, editor of Aotearotica, to discuss her event entitled Pleasure & Pain: Writing About Sex and Sexuality. At 9:30am we welcome on Jack Vening, who's been invited across the ditch after his Dawson's Creek fan fiction took the festival by storm two years ago.

Friday: After all of the wordy goodness of the NZYWF, it's the turn for politics to rule the airwaves. As always, the Radio One Breakfast Politics Team chats about the week's events at 8:30am. Then at 9:10am, the (hopeful) leaders of tomorrow battle it out in the OUSA Presidential Candidates Debate.
